Natural Elite Shungite Pendant

Elite shungite is for anyone who, having come to trust the everyday matte stone, wants shungite at its purest and brightest. Where regular shungite is a soft matte black, the elite or noble grade is a striking silvery, almost metallic black that catches the light, and it is far scarcer, a small fraction of what comes out of the Karelian deposits in north-west Russia. The difference is carbon: elite shungite runs to ninety per cent or more, against a fraction of that in the regular stone, and it is this purity that earns it the names noble, silver, and crystal shungite. It is more brittle than the matte stone and breaks with bright, glassy faces.

It is associated with the Root Chakra, the grounding centre that ties the body to the earth.

In the crystal tradition today, elite shungite carries the same protective and purifying character as the base stone, only held stronger for its higher carbon, and it is especially turned to for water, dropped into a jug to cleanse and soften what people drink. It is known for grounding and for clearing heavy energy, and is understood to support the body's resilience. Like all shungite its tradition is wholly modern, but the elite grade has become the one people seek when they want the stone at full strength.

Elite shungite stops people who already know the matte kind, because it looks so different: a bright silvery black with a real metallic shine, almost like hematite, scattered with glassy flashes. It feels cool and noticeably more brittle, breaking into sharp little faces rather than the soft chalkiness of the regular stone. We reach for it with people who want the purest shungite they can get, often for their drinking water, and with collectors who simply love the look of those bright, mirror-like fragments.

Many people buy elite shungite specifically for water, resting a clean piece in a jug or bottle for several hours to cleanse and energise what they drink. Some keep the small silvery fragments close as a stronger grounding and protective stone than the regular grade, tucked in a pocket or set by the bed. Because the bright pieces are small and a little fragile, they are usually kept in a dish or pouch rather than carried loose.

Elite shungite (Mohs 3.5-4) is brittle, so store the small pieces away from harder stones and avoid heavy impact. In water it slowly breaks down over time, so cleanse it gently with sound, smoke, or moonlight rather than soaking, and replace any piece once it starts to crumble.
