Sodalite Crystal Tumble

Sodalite is a stone for a clearer head, the one for when your thoughts are crowded and you want to think and speak with a bit more order. It is a deep royal blue, usually marbled with white veins of calcite and sometimes flecked with grey, and at a glance it is easily mistaken for lapis lazuli, though sodalite is more uniformly blue and lacks the gold pyrite sparkle. It is a sodium-rich silicate, which is where its name comes from, and it is found in Brazil, Canada, and elsewhere. Most pieces are opaque, with a soft, waxy sheen rather than a bright, glassy shine.

It is associated with the Throat Chakra, the centre of honest expression, and with the Third Eye Chakra, the seat of insight and intuition. Both links are modern: sodalite is an old stone, but its place in the chakra framework was assigned only in the modern tradition.

In modern crystal practice, sodalite is turned to for clear thinking and calm, rational communication. It is often called the stone of logic and truth, for the way it brings the mind and the spoken word into agreement. It is known for settling mental chatter and for the grounded honesty that lets a person say what they mean. It is understood to support the throat and thyroid, the glands, and the body's metabolic balance, including digestion. Sodalite is an easy stone to love: a deep, calm royal blue webbed with white, smooth and cool and pleasant to hold. People often pick it up thinking it is lapis, and it is worth a moment to point out the difference, the plain blue and white against lapis's gold-flecked richness. It has a quieter, more thoughtful feel than the brighter blue stones. Sodalite (Mohs 5.5-6) is reasonably durable, though its colour can fade with long exposure to strong sun, so keep display pieces out of direct light. Cleanse with sound, moonlight, smoke, or a brief rinse under cool water, avoiding prolonged soaking. A soft dry cloth keeps it bright.
