Properties & Traditions
Black kyanite is the stone people reach for when they want a clearing and a fresh start, turned to to sweep away heavy or stagnant energy and to feel grounded and protected again. It is the cleansing stone of the kyanite family, a deep black mineral that grows in distinctive fanned, blade-like sprays that splay out like a fan or a feather. Like all kyanite it forms in long, bladed crystals, and shares the family's unusual directional hardness, noticeably softer along the length of the blade than across it. The black colour comes from iron and other trace elements within the silicate.
Modern practice places black kyanite at the Root Chakra of the Hindu and Vedic chakra system, the grounding centre that ties the body to the earth.
Black kyanite is known for clearing and grounding at once, drawn on to brush off what feels heavy and to restore a sense of steady footing. It is associated with energetic cleansing, protection, and the cutting of ties that no longer serve, and like the rest of its family it is one of the few stones the tradition holds never needs cleansing itself, said instead to clear other stones and spaces around it.

Our team's experience
Black kyanite has a wonderful natural shape, those splayed black blades that fan out in a spray, quite unlike a typical tumble or point. People often reach for it instinctively when they say they feel weighed down or stuck. It is light and a little fragile, the blades flaking if handled roughly. We hand it to anyone wanting a clearing, a reset after a hard stretch, a clean line drawn under something, and we explain how to handle it gently.
How our customers use it
Many people use black kyanite for clearing, sweeping a piece through their own energy field or around a space when they want to shift something heavy. Some keep it by the door as a grounding, protective presence, others hold it during meditation to feel steadier. It is often used to cleanse other crystals, laid alongside them in place of the usual rinse or smoke. It tends to suit people drawn to energetic housekeeping and fresh starts.
Care notes
Black kyanite is fragile and splits easily along its blades (Mohs 4-7, softer along the length), so handle it gently and keep it apart from harder stones. A dry wipe is best; avoid prolonged soaking and sharp knocks, which flake the blades. It is stable in normal light.
