Chrysoprase is a stone for the slow healing of long-held emotional wounds—the kind of hurt carried so long it has become part of the furniture of a life, and is only now ready to be set down. It is the most prized of the green chalcedonies, coloured an unmistakable apple-green to deep gem-green by traces of nickel rather than the iron or chromium that colour most other green stones. The name comes from the Greek chrysos (gold) and prason (leek), a reference to its bright leafy colour. The Greeks and Romans set chrysoprase into rings and signet stones, and Alexander the Great was said to have worn one in his belt during his Asian campaigns. The medieval European tradition associated it with truth-telling, with the gentle keeping of secrets, and with the steadying of the heart during long undertakings.

It is associated with the Heart Chakra in the Hindu and Vedic tradition that places this energy centre at the seat of love, compassion, and emotional knowing.

Today, in the crystal tradition, chrysoprase is one of the deepest of the heart stones—warmer than aventurine, more substantial than rose quartz, a stone for those whose emotional life has asked a great deal of them. It is associated with self-acceptance, the gentle release of jealousy and resentment, and the steadying of the heart in periods of emotional uncertainty. The tradition links it to the work of the heart, the liver, and the body's deeper systems of detoxification and renewal.

Chrysoprase has a colour you don't forget. A good piece has a green that looks almost translucent in the right light—closer to a polished leaf or a deep tropical sea than to the dustier greens of jade or aventurine. Many people keep a tumble in a pouch worn around the neck as a daily companion through periods of emotional work, the stone resting close to the breastbone where its quiet weight is felt more than seen. It is a popular choice for grids around forgiveness work, self-acceptance, and the slow steadying of the heart after long upheaval. Some wear it as jewellery for the same reason: a private daily reminder of work in progress.

Chrysoprase is hard and stable (Mohs 7), and reasonably easy to care for. Cleanse with running water, sound, moonlight, or smoke. The bright green can fade under strong direct sunlight over years of exposure, so display in shaded or indirect light is preferable.
