Properties & Traditions
Howlite is the stone people reach for when their mind will not settle, when worry loops late at night or stress has tightened into something that will not let go. A chalky white stone laced with fine grey veining, it is gentle and unassuming, and that quietness is much of its appeal. It was first described in the 1860s by the Canadian geologist Henry How, after whom it is named. A soft, porous borate mineral, it takes colour readily, which is why so much of the blue stone sold as turquoise is in fact dyed howlite. In its honest white form it has a calm, cloud-like presence.
Howlite is far too recent a discovery to carry any ancient history; everything in its metaphysical practice belongs to the modern crystal tradition, which places it at the Crown Chakra of the Hindu and Vedic chakra system, the centre associated with a quiet, settled mind.
Howlite is held to be one of the calmest of stones, reached for to still an overactive mind, ease anxious or racing thoughts, and quiet the kind of tension that keeps a person from rest. In keeping with its calcium content and its bone-white colour, the tradition also links it to the bones and teeth, and turns to it to loosen the muscular tension that anxiety leaves behind. It is associated with patience, stillness, gentler sleep, and the slow release of pent-up stress.

Our team's experience
Howlite is one of the stones we most often hand to someone who tells us they cannot switch their mind off at night. It is plain and matte, white with soft grey marbling, and there is something about that very plainness that feels restful, nothing to dazzle, nothing to demand attention. People sometimes pass over it for showier stones, then come back for it once they have lived with it a while. Most coloured howlite is dyed, and the natural white is the one we point people toward.
How our customers use it
Many people keep howlite by the bed to quiet a busy mind before sleep, valuing one of the gentlest of the calming stones. Some hold a tumble during meditation or slow breathing, others carry one through stressful days as a small steadying weight in the pocket. It is often reached for in moments of frustration or anxious anticipation, when the aim is simply to slow down and let racing thoughts settle. People drawn to stillness tend to keep one close.
Care notes
Howlite is soft and porous (Mohs 3.5), so keep it away from water, salt, and oils, which stain or damage it, and store it apart from harder stones that may scratch it. Cleanse gently with sound or moonlight, and keep dyed pieces out of direct sun, where colour can fade.
