Selenite is named for Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, and there is something of that lineage in how it carries itself—luminous, soft, and quietly otherworldly. The Greeks used it as a translucent window material in temple architecture, where its near-transparent layers let in a softened, moon-like light. Most of what is sold as selenite today is in fact satin spar, the silky, fibrous, milky-white form of gypsum, the two names used almost interchangeably. It is most closely associated with the Crown Chakra and the Third Eye Chakra—the upper centres that Hindu and Vedic traditions place at the seat of stillness, perception, and connection to something larger than the self.

In the modern crystal healing tradition, selenite is widely regarded as one of the highest-vibration stones a person can work with. Its most well-known property in modern practice is the one that makes it different from almost every other crystal—it is held to clear and renew the energy of other stones simply by being near them. The same tradition associates it with mental clarity, expanded awareness, flexible thinking, and the steadiness of mind that good decisions need. It has long been linked to the work of the skeletal system and to the body's processes of cellular renewal, and is considered a stone of longevity.

Among the white stones, selenite has a presence that feels less like clearing the air and more like letting in light. One important note: selenite should never be placed in water, as it will dissolve.

Selenite weighs almost nothing for its size—a surprise the first time you handle a piece. The satiny, fibrous surface catches the light from across a room; the wands have a softness you can feel along their length; the towers stand in a quiet way that other stones don't quite match. Selenite is one of the stones we keep our own pieces of close to where we work, simply because the shop runs better with it nearby. It is also one of the stones people most often come back for a second time.

Most people who buy selenite already have an idea of where it will go. We see selenite wands moved gently around the body or through the rooms of a home, sometimes paired with other crystals in a ritual the customer has built for themselves over time. Others simply keep a piece on a bedside table or in a quiet corner of a meditation space, where its presence invites slower, more attentive moments. There are as many small rituals around selenite as there are people who work with it.

Selenite (Mohs 2) is soft and water-soluble: never rinse, soak, or leave outside in damp conditions. Cleanse with sound, smoke, or simply moonlight. A dry cloth is all that is needed for dust.
