Shungite Crystal Cube

Shungite is a stone for clearing the air, the one people reach for when their space or their head feels cluttered and they want something honest and grounding to set against it. It is one of the genuinely unconventional materials we work with: not a crystal at all but a carbon mineraloid, a deep matte black, found almost only in Karelia in north-west Russia, where deposits run to hundreds of millions of years old. Its prized component is fullerenes, a rare molecular form of carbon, which is partly why it has gathered such a following. Its tradition is wholly modern, too recent to carry ancient history, but few stones have a reputation this devoted. Most pieces are the common matte grade rather than the high-carbon silvery elite type, and it is soft enough to leave a faint mark on the hands.

It is associated with the Root Chakra, the grounding centre that ties the body to the earth.

In the modern crystal healing tradition, shungite is turned to for protection and purification, valued above all as a cleansing and grounding stone and widely placed near electronics to absorb and neutralise unwanted energy. Shungite (Mohs 3.5-4) is soft and can leave a light residue, so handle it simply and wash your hands after holding raw matte pieces. Cleanse with sound, smoke, or moonlight, or a brief rinse if you prefer, though many keep good pieces dry and wipe them with a soft cloth.
