Hematite is the stone people reach for when they feel scattered, frayed, or pulled in too many directions and want to come back to solid ground. It is an iron oxide, the same iron that runs through our own blood, and its name comes from the Greek for blood, after the deep red streak it leaves when ground and the red earth it weathers into. Ancient cultures used hematite, but did not assign it to a chakra; that linking is modern, placing it at the Root Chakra of the Hindu and Vedic chakra system, the grounding centre that ties the body to the earth.
