Properties & Traditions
New Jade is not, strictly speaking, jade at all. It is serpentine, a soft green stone also known as bowenite, sold under the jade name because its smooth, soothing green so closely resembles the real thing. We think it is worth being clear about that, and worth saying too that it is a lovely stone in its own right, with a fresh, almost spring-green colour and a gentle, easy presence. Serpentine takes its name from its mottled, snakeskin-like patterning, and forms where water has worked slowly on certain iron and magnesium-rich rocks deep in the earth. Because it is softer than true jade, it carves beautifully, which is part of why it has long stood in for jade in beads and ornaments.
Because it is sold and used as jade, New Jade has taken on jade's modern associations, which place it at the Heart Chakra of the Hindu and Vedic chakra system, in keeping with its green colour.
In crystal practice today, New Jade is turned to for jade's themes of abundance and good fortune, with an added note of fresh starts and gentle renewal that suits its bright, youthful green. It is associated with healing, emotional ease, and the quiet rebuilding of energy, a stone for tending new growth rather than guarding what is already established.

Our team's experience
New Jade has a colour we are quite fond of, a soft, fresh, almost apple-green that feels lighter and younger than true jade. It is smooth and a little waxy to the touch, pleasant to hold, and it takes a lovely polish. We always tell people plainly that it is serpentine rather than jade, and most are perfectly happy once they understand, drawn to the colour and the price rather than the name. It suits someone wanting jade's gentle, hopeful feel without the cost of the real stone.
How our customers use it
Many people keep New Jade for its sense of fresh starts, often during a new chapter or a season of rebuilding rather than for guarding something long-established. Some carry a smooth tumble for its easy, calming presence, others keep a carved piece in the home for gentle abundance and good fortune. It tends to suit people drawn to jade's spirit who like the lighter green, and who appreciate knowing exactly what they are holding.
Care notes
New Jade is fairly soft (Mohs 2.5-5.5), so handle it with some care and keep it apart from harder stones that might scratch it. Cleanse it with sound or moonlight rather than prolonged water, and wipe it dry if it does get wet. Keep it out of harsh chemicals.
