Bloodstone is a stone of courage and endurance, turned to when someone needs to steady their nerve and keep going through something hard. Also called heliotrope, from the Greek for "sun-turning," it is a deep green chalcedony spotted with small red inclusions of iron oxide, the flecks giving the stone the look of blood spattered across moss, and it carries one of the longest and most layered histories of any crystal in the European tradition. The Greeks associated it with the sun, believing that the stone, placed in water and held to the light, could refract the reflection in a way that suggested the sun setting on bloodied waters. In medieval European Christian tradition, bloodstone became the stone of the Crucifixion: legend held that the red flecks were the blood of Christ falling onto green jasper at the foot of the cross. It was carved into crucifixes, devotional objects, and amulets for soldiers throughout the medieval period.

Pre-Christian European, Mesopotamian, and Egyptian traditions also held bloodstone in high regard, often as a stone of warriors, of physical courage, and of the body's healing after wound or strain. It is associated with the Root and Heart Chakras in the Hindu and Vedic tradition.
