Properties & Traditions
Pietersite is the stone for those moving through chaotic seasons—for people whose lives are in genuine upheaval, where the work is no longer about restoring an old order but about finding the deeper steadiness underneath the storm. It is associated with the Throat Chakra and the Third Eye Chakra in the Hindu and Vedic tradition. The stone is a fascinating geological hybrid: a breccia (broken and re-cemented rock) containing fragments of both blue and golden tiger eye varieties suspended in a quartz matrix, producing dramatic swirling patterns of slate-blue, gold, brown, and red that look almost stormy across the surface. It was discovered in Namibia in the 1960s and named for the man who found it; small quantities have also been found in Henan, China. The named stone is therefore entirely modern, but the tiger eye varieties within it carry the older traditions of clear seeing.
In the modern crystal healing tradition, Pietersite has earned its other common name—the Tempest Stone—for its association with the steady eye at the centre of chaos. It is held to support the insight that arrives unexpectedly, the courage required for radical change, and the steadying of perception during periods when ordinary clarity has been lost. The tradition links it to the work of the nervous system, the lungs, and the body's deeper rhythms of resilience under sustained pressure.

Our team's experience
Turn a piece of Pietersite in the light and the storm shows itself—slate-blues meeting golds meeting deep red-browns in swirling patterns that genuinely look weather-like, as if the surface is moving. Every piece is dramatically different, and a good piece carries both the chatoyancy of the tiger eyes within it and the broken-and-rejoined quality of the breccia structure. We tend to sell Pietersite to people in genuine periods of life upheaval—divorce, the death of a parent, the dismantling of a long-held career—and to those drawn to its visible drama.
How our customers use it
Pietersite is often carried during periods of significant change rather than displayed at a distance—a tumble in the pocket through the working day, a pendant worn close to the body during periods of major transition. Many people keep a piece on a meditation altar dedicated to a particular chapter of upheaval, working with it consistently until that chapter resolves and then setting it aside. It is also a popular companion stone for grids around radical change, decisive action, and the keeping of one's footing during storms.
Care notes
Pietersite is hard and stable (Mohs 7), and easy to care for. Cleanse with running water, sound, moonlight, or smoke. The chatoyancy and colours are stable in normal light. Wipe with a soft cloth to maintain the polish of finished pieces.
