Properties & Traditions
Mahogany obsidian is the gentler, grounding obsidian, a rich brown-and-black volcanic glass marbled with deep reddish-mahogany patches, valued for grounding, protection, and a steadier, more nurturing kind of strength. Where black obsidian can feel uncompromising, mahogany is warmer and more forgiving. People turn to it when they want obsidian's protection without its starkness, and for gently releasing old hurts or worn-out patterns. Like all obsidian it is a natural volcanic glass, formed as lava cools too fast to crystallise; the mahogany colouring comes from inclusions of iron, which stain the black glass in warm bands and clouds, no two pieces patterned quite the same. Its place in crystal practice, like the stone itself as a named variety, is modern.

In the Hindu and Vedic tradition mahogany obsidian is linked to both the Root and Sacral Chakras, joining grounding to the warmth of the creative centre.

In the modern tradition, what people take from mahogany obsidian is a gentler strength. It grounds and protects like the rest of the family, but it is the stone for steadying frayed nerves and for loosening old hurt that has outstayed its welcome, rather than for confrontation. Working with it tends to leave a person feeling restored rather than exposed, the warm bands doing their work slowly.
Our team's experience
Mahogany obsidian has a warm, handsome look, glossy black marbled with deep reddish-brown, like polished timber. People find it less intense than pure black obsidian, more approachable. It feels smooth and grounding in the hand. We point people toward it when they want obsidian's protection and grounding in a gentler form, or are working to release something old and could do with a steadier, kinder sort of strength.
How our customers use it
Many people keep mahogany obsidian for grounded protection and gentle healing, carrying a piece through draining times or holding it while working to release an old hurt or habit. Some keep it on a desk or by the bed for its steady, warming presence. It draws on black obsidian's protective grounding in a softer, more nurturing form, suiting people who want strength and protection without harshness.
Care notes
Mahogany obsidian is a natural glass (Mohs 5-5.5), so it can chip and may have sharp edges on raw pieces, so handle with care. Cleanse it under cool running water or with sound, smoke, or moonlight, and rest it on the earth to refresh its grounding.
